Trac is widely used project management systems, maybe the most popular on the web. It includes many features: Ticket Management, svn repositories, wiki and time lines… but Trac isn’t perfect… installation is in most of cases difficult and laborious, and the source code is written in Python (in fact … everyone does not know python). That is why we will present three alternatives to Trac, including two written in PHP … and one in Ruby.

Indefero:

Indefero is the work of Loic Anterroches who is also known as the founder of Céondo and creator of plume cms. The advantage of indefero is that it’s entirely written in php and therefore, easily customizable. Indefero has a simple user and nice looking interface (just like google code) while remaining very complete… and even supports multi-projects. In addition to being compatible with svn, git and cvs repositories, you can indefero install indefero on your server by downloading the sources … or use the webservice offered by Loic and enjoy indefero without installing it.

Usvn:

Usvn is a French project and still remains very young. This project management system supports group creation and ldap authentification which is very useful for larger company’s. A good alternative to Trac for those who want to manage projects through svn. Note that usvn requires pdo mysql.

Retrospectiva:

Retrospectiva is a project manager written in Ruby. Even if Retrospectiva is a little harder to install compared to a regular php application, this project manager remains the most comprehensive of the three mentioned in this article. Blog, ticket, mile-stones, wiki, file browser, RSS feeds and even a REST API makes retrospectiva what it is.
